Philippines digital and financial services firm Voyager Innovations has appointed seasoned banker Angelo Madrid as President of Maya Bank, its digital banking arm that will be operated by its fintech spin-off PayMaya.

The appointment comes on the heels of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) granting a digital banking license to Maya Bank, making it one of the seven recipients under the new digital banking category.

Madrid brings over 15 years of experience across banking, fintech, microfinance, and law. Before joining Maya Bank, he served as the Country Manager of Tala, a US based fintech lending startup serving unbanked customers in emerging markets, including the Philippines.

Under his leadership, Tala grew from a five-person operation in 2017 to a team of 200 employees, serving over 1.5 million borrowers in the Philippines

Madrid also held various leadership roles in Citibank New York, including co-founding a fintech startup within Citi Ventures that uses alternative data to help consumers in the US gain access to credit.

Early in his career, he was a banking and finance lawyer at Baker & McKenzie (QT) and Sycip Law.

Madrid holds a bachelor’s degree in Management and a law degree from the Ateneo de Manila University. He completed his MBA from Duke University – Fuqua School of Business.

Maya Bank is expected to expand PayMaya’s ecosystem with innovative services that are accessible, affordable, and relevant to Filipino consumers and enterprises.
