GCash, in partnership with the Department of Transportation, has launched a cashless automated fare collection system for the MRT-3 railway line. The system allows commuters to pay for their trips using their GCash wallet. It gives commuters access to a dedicated fast lane at stations.
Commuters can choose from three new ways to pay for their rides. The ‘Tap to Pay’ feature allows users with NFC-enabled Android phones to tap their device on the turnstile after a one-time activation in the app.
Alternatively, the ‘Commute QR’ option lets any user generate a QR code in the GCash app. Users can scan the QR code for both entry and exit. This feature also works without mobile data for Globe and TM subscribers.
For the third method, users can tap a physical GCash Visa Card that links to their wallet.
To use the service, a commuter needs a minimum balance of PHP 28 in their GCash wallet, which is the maximum fare. The system deducts this maximum amount upon entry and automatically credits the correct change to the wallet upon exit. Users can also track all transactions in the app’s transaction history.
While the GCash Visa Card option is in its soft launch phase, GCash will credit the fare change to the user’s wallet within 24 hours of their trip. GCash’s mobile wallet operations are handled by G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI), which is regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
