BDO Unibank has described as “baseless” the claims from content creator Jana Berenguer of a system compromise and insider involvement in a series of alleged unauthorised transactions on her account.
The case gained public attention after Jana posted videos on social media about the incident.
In a statement, BDO said its investigation found no evidence of a system breach or insider activity.
The bank’s findings show that on September 14, a password reset and a new device registration occurred on Jana’s account. The system validated both actions using a one-time password (OTP) sent to her registered mobile number. The bank also confirmed that the number was not altered.
BDO’s system also reportedly sent alerts for the registration and the transactions on September 15, hours before the client made a report via the hotline.
Berenguer’s agency, Talent Marketers Inc., defended her, stating:
“We categorically assert that our talent did not share her password, her OTP, nor did she click on any suspicious links.”
However, BDO noted that Berenguer acknowledged in a media interview that other people had accessed her mobile device at some point.
The bank emphasised that transactions on its BDO Pay platform require a PIN or biometrics, not an OTP. BDO Unibank explained that it only requires an OTP for device registration.
BDO maintained that its security controls worked as intended and that no one bypassed them.
“BDO has put in place different features intended to protect clients’ accounts,” the bank stated. “These controls will not work if clients ignore warning signs and messages sent by the bank through official channels.”
