The Securities and Exchange Commission recently issued a public advisory regarding the rise of fraudulent financial activities in the Philippines.
The regulatory body warned the public to exercise extreme caution when engaging in loan transactions through Telegram and similar applications.
Regulators have observed a growing number of complaints involving unverified individuals conducting unauthorised lending scams.
These fraudulent actors often use the names and logos of legitimate financing companies to deceive unsuspecting victims.
The commission noted a common tactic where perpetrators request advance fees or processing charges prior to releasing any funds.
These operations often rely on communications made solely through private messaging accounts rather than official corporate channels.
Regulators also received reports of scammers inviting prospective borrowers to join chat groups filled with fabricated testimonials.
These orchestrated conversations create a false appearance of legitimacy to pressure victims into remitting money.
The public is strongly advised to verify if a financing entity holds a valid Certificate of Authority before engaging in any transaction.
A separate SEC advisory also warned against fraudsters falsely representing themselves as government employees or bank representatives.
These individuals contact victims through social media platforms and electronic channels to execute impersonation scams.
Perpetrators exploit trust and urgency to gain unauthorised access to confidential data, which can result in severe financial loss.
The commission emphasised that legitimate institutions will never request sensitive information such as passwords or one-time PINs via informal channels.
Consumers are urged not to click suspicious links or download unverified files sent through messaging applications.
The public should immediately report any suspicious or potentially fraudulent lending activities to the appropriate authorities.
