The Philippines LRT-2 line in Manila now accepts Mastercard contactless payments, as reported by YugaTech.
Commuters can tap Mastercard credit, debit and prepaid cards, or mobile wallets linked to eligible Mastercard cards, to pay their fare.
The contactless option works at designated Fast Lanes for station entry, letting riders tap their card or an NFC-enabled device instead of buying a separate fare card.
It joins LRT-2’s existing cashless options, which include mobile NFC payments and GCash Commute QR.
Mastercard Philippines Country Manager Jason Crasto said the rollout is meant to make commuting more seamless and secure, adding that “paying for a ride should be just as effortless” as everyday spending.
The LRT-2 rollout follows a similar launch on MRT-3 in July 2025, when Mastercard became the first international payment network to bring contactless “Tap & Go” fares to Metro Manila’s rail system, building on an initial 2024 pilot with Beep card operator AF Payments.
The Department of Transportation has said it also plans to extend contactless fare payments to LRT-1, in partnership with RCBC.
The move adds to a broader push toward open-loop transit payments in the Philippines, with Visa separately rolling out similar contactless fare systems on MRT-3 and in cities including Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod.
