Janos Schwellach is joining Maya as Director of Data Science and AI, according to a LinkedIn post announcing his move to the Philippines.

Schwellach previously worked as a Principal Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services, where he advised companies on AI and cloud adoption.

In his post, Schwellach described Maya as one of the Philippines’ leading fintech platforms, pointing to its user base and the depth of financial data it generates through credit decisions, fraud detection, payments and personalisation.

He said the country’s largely underbanked, fast-growing market offers significant opportunity for financial technology done well.

“After years of helping companies adopt AI from the outside, I’m going in,” Schwellach wrote. “Building the team, the models, and the products.”

Maya operates Maya Bank, one of the digital banks licensed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

The BSP capped its digital banking licences at six when it closed applications in 2021, though a seventh licence has since gone to MariBank Philippines, which upgraded from a rural bank licence in July 2026.

Schwellach’s post cites a user base of more than 35 million, a figure that reflects his own account of Maya’s reach rather than one independently confirmed against the company’s public disclosures.

Before Amazon, Schwellach held technical leadership roles at Helix Leisure and Ubisoft Singapore, and holds a master’s degree from the University of Bremen.
