BlockShoals Technologies, Binance’s local partner in the Philippines, is assessing whether the recent Binance hack has any implications for its regulatory sandbox project, the company said in a statement.
BlockShoals said it will coordinate with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and provide updates as appropriate.
It also noted that Binance’s assurances, including that user funds are safe and that losses will be covered through its Secure Asset Fund for Users, were made by Binance itself.
US$6.3 Billion Breach, the Largest Known Crypto Hack
Binance disclosed a suspected security breach on 29 October and temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals.
Tether and Circle froze more than US$2.5 billion in stablecoins linked to the attack.
The stolen assets have since been estimated at about US$6.3 billion, making it the largest known crypto hack.
Binance resumed withdrawals in phases from 1 November and said it had replenished about 95% of the affected assets.
Binance’s Sandbox Route Back Into the Philippines
BlockShoals is the SEC-approved Crypto Asset Intermediary through which Binance products are offered locally under the SEC’s Strategic Sandbox.
BlockShoals handles regulatory compliance, while Binance provides the technology and operational support, Philstar noted.
The arrangement followed the SEC’s move to restrict access to Binance in 2024 over licensing concerns.
Binance has since appointed Jen Bilango as its Philippine general manager.
BlockShoals urged the public to rely on Binance’s official channels and to watch out for fraudulent offers to recover funds.
